Occupy Wall Street
Occupy Wall Street (OWS) was a protest movement that began in 2011 in New York City’s financial district, highlighting income inequality, corporate greed, and the influence of money in politics. With its slogan “We are the 99%,” it sparked similar occupations worldwide, bringing attention to issues like student debt, labor rights, and economic injustice. Unlike traditional movements, OWS was leaderless and relied on consensus-based decision-making, which some praised as democratic while others criticized as inefficient. Though it faded without achieving concrete policy changes, OWS helped shift public discourse on economic inequality and inspired later movements like Bernie Sanders’ progressive campaigns. Considering the recent move towards oligarchy in the USA, I would like to see a revival of this group.
